The sixth annual clean air forum of the Partnership for Clean Air, Inc., a network of clean air advocates, of which the Firefly Brigade is a member, showed that pollution is becoming a big health issue, despite an apparent average downward trend in total suspended particles. This is probably the only highlight of the forum worth talking about. The rest was the usual babble of talking heads with little to say about what to do about pollution, which in Metro Manila is overwhelming due to motor vehicles (85 percent). The forum was held 26-27 June at the DENR Social Hall.

Explain Me This: How a Bicycle Works

Even with modern scientific investigation tools, advanced computer simulation, AI and robotics, scientists around the world are still groping in the dark when it comes to explaining how the bicycle works or why it stays upright and stable as it moves, with or without a rider. The bicycle now has almost 200 years of history behind it, indeed a lot more than its far distant four-wheeled relative, the car, in which tons of technological innovations and advancements have been poured into, but somehow, not a single scientific evidence has been found that will explain why we can put two wheels on a frame made of steel (or whatever material) and make this strange contraption called a bicycle (also used to be called a "velocipede") go.
