Project Bakawan Arts Festival Ride - Mixing Contemporary Art and the Art of Bicycling

Tangan Tanglaw an installation art by Katti Sta. Ana

Tangan-Tangay - an installation art by Katti Sta. Ana

We have puto and dinuguan, a food combo like no other.  We have mangga and bagoong, a sweet, sour and salty combo that can make anyone salivate with gustatory and savory pleasure.

But a combo of modern art and a group of bicyclists from different backgrounds, one can wonder if this would work.  And yet it did!  Yesterday was one of the most memorable bike ride we have joined and it was a heady experience of bicycling in and around the University of the Philippines, mixed with not just viewing and touching art, but also hearing sound bites of recorded music right in the street.

A lesson in playing sungka: sharing limited resources and stewardship

A Street Genious: Listening to musical sound bites while waiting for the IKOT jeep

The Project Bakawan Arts Festival Ride started a bit late. We went to the Vargas museum at around 4:45 PM just as it was about to close at 5:00. There were several featured artists and even if you are not an art connoisseur, you could certainly appreciate the world of art and how artists chose to present their vision and imagination.

"That one looks just like what I did when I was 4 years old..."

A giant hat for our bald bicyclist here? Reminds us of the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

Firefly Freedom Fighters sans bolos and spears? Peace!

Who would think that one can conceive of presenting art in a former stud farm and now converted to a materials recovery facility? UP professor, artist and Firefly Brigade founder Katti Sta. Ana led the bicyclists to a grand visual tour of this facility where some of her students,in cooperation with the community of people residing nearby, created what is called installation art - an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. Indeed, the art we saw can change, and in fact, as related by Katti herself, there are evidence that the people who collaborated with the creation of these installation art pieces have not only changed their view of this wasteland turned bigger than life art pieces but also their attitude towards their community and the people who live there.

It was already dark when Katti announced that we will now leave the facility. After usual goodbyes and thank yous to the overseer, we rode our bikes to get ready but Katti had one more surprise for the bicyclists.  A mini-trail right inside the facility!  Some of the bicyclists have road bikes that are not actually made for trail riding but they gamely proceeded to go through the mini-trail and they survived!

You may know what it is to be a bicyclist and want to be safe on the road. Read how  A Bicyclist in Mad Avenue is able to survive his daily commute with or without bike lanes. Check out how  Being A Frugal and Happy Bicyclist can help you enjoy your bicycle ride everytime.
